KC Bar B Q burns

Kansas City Bar B Q - the famed eatery in San Diego burned this weekend - you all will remember the place from the movie Top Gun - you know, where they did the Great Balls of Fire scene and others.

Any way - this joint is a fun place to visit - the food is average, I have never found the service to be good, but the beer is cold and it is famous!

Hopefully they will be able to rebuild and move on.

Sports this weekend

well, this was an awesome weekend if you were a sports fan - there was so much to pay attention to that the DVR was working OT this weekend.

Congrats to Spain on their victory in Euro 2008 - they certainly were the best team yesterday and played great soccer all throughout the tourny.

If anyone is not watching the Olympic Trials you should - they have had high drama already. Swimming and Track and Field are both going on this week and coverage can be found on multiple channels and the web.

Yesterday Tyson Gay ran a 9.68 (wind aided) to win and qualify for the Olympics - it is the fastest 100m time ever (wind or no wind). He ran a 9.77 in the semi finals to set a new American Record. 9.68 is the equivalent to running 23 mph. Congrats to Walter Dix (FSU senior) on making the Olympics by running 9.8 and placing second

In swimming Phelps and Lochte battled it out in the 400 IM and both of the them broke the World Record - only Phelps keeps it because he beat the other dude! They both swam the 400 IM in about 4:06 - that would be equal to a 15:20 1500m swim in a triathlon - amazing - think how fast they would go if they swam only freestyle.

Can't wait for the rest fo the trials and see the amazing athletes that will be representing the US at the Olympics in August!

Baldwin Park Tri - Epic Challenge

Congrats to the Epic Challenge athletes that raced Baldwin Park this weekend

Mandy - 1st woman overall
Ralph - 3rd AG
Telethe - 6th AG

This group is rounding into shape well and will be ready to rock the Florida Challenge

Modest Mouse Show - a novice opinion

I had the opportunity to stretch my musical horizons last night and see a show of a band that I have never listened to before (at least before I found out I was going to the show) - Modest Mouse. There will be many show reviews out there and some will say Modest Mouse is a sell out (see Nissan Commercial), others will say their new stuff is better than old (old fans will tell new fans they do not belong), and then there is me - new to the whole deal. I did not even know Modest Mouse had a song in a Nissan commercial.

Here is what I can tell you about the show last night - it was pretty damn loud (hey, I am pretty damn old), all the boys in the crowd dressed alike (think retro used clothes store) - ok, so did the girls, for an "Indie" rock band they sure do charge a lot for tickets, I like the live music way better than the recorded.

Here is what else I noticed - HRL is a nice venue but I still prefer smaller venues like HOB and the Social, parking is horrible (or I am just stupid), Johnny Marr is nothing less than Rock Royalty, I like the songs with the banjo the best.

Will I ever listen to Modest Mouse? Sure, they had some good songs (I had to look them up on You TuBe this morning because I knew none of their songs) - I liked Satin in a Coffin and King Rat - I think some of their new songs are Float On and Dashboard - they were pretty good.

I like any band that plays music and is about the music - the show last night was about 80 minute long and I bet they played 20+ songs - it was the band and the stage and the crowd. Johnny Marr went through about 10 guitars and they had squeeze box, banjo, stand up bass, keyboard box, trumpet - it was all pretty cool.

Overall I rate the show a 6 - it was fun and we went with some great friends - would I pay $45 again? maybe not - would I see them in a nice small venue? hell yea! Will I download some music and give it a further listen? sure, I am always open to new stuff.

Next up - Vans Warped Tour - I will be the oldest person there - but you can not take a pass on Reel Big Fish when they are in town.

Congrats to Stacey

Congrats to Stacey Bartos - owner of Fleet Feet Sports and exceptional runner. Stacey completed the Grandma's Marathon this weekend in 3:17:18 and placed 4th in her AG out of 324 and 29th of 2533 females. This exceptional time also qualified her for Boston 2009!

Congrats Stacey.

UCF Race = Disorganized

I rode my bike out to UCF yesterday to watch some clients compete in the race out there. The ride is a nice one from our house downtown - I hopped on the Cady Way trail - switched over to whatever the trail is called by Goldenrod and followed that to 426 - took 426 to Chapman Rd and then south on 434 to UCF - it is about 18 miles and besides the trail 426 and 434 have bike lanes.

One thing that really annoys me as a spectator is the lack or organization with races, maybe I do not realize it when the race is going on because I am in race mode. Yesterday was no different - I rode in about 7:15a - just in time for a 7;30a start. When I got there I noticed a line of people about 25-30 long waiting to get registered - hummmm - they are going to have a hard time making a 7:30a start.

About 7:35a they announced the start was going to be delayed, by 7:50a there was still a line of people waiting to get checked in. Finally they announced the race would start at 8:00a - 30 minutes late - hope no one was planning their nutrition on a 7:30a start.

When the swim started I decided to move to the bike mount line and watch the action from there. I think I found the right area but there were no markings or volunteers present just a cop waiting to lead the cyclists. I did notice a race official trying to move some cones and signs around in order to set up the bike exit area.

When the first cyclists came out - no one knew where to go and no one was there to help them. Thankfully the cop was ready to lead them around UCF and there was another cop controlling traffic. Finally some spectators started to help guide athletes in the right directions. At some point they started to set up the run course and put a sign with an arrow (and a picture of a biker on it) in the intersections so the bikers started to follow that sign - which was the wrong direction - they only lost 30-40 seconds before they were stopped.

The bike exit, bike entry, run exit and run finish were all in the same entrance to the same parking lot so it was quite confusing for everyone - there were lots of shouts of disgust. Bike dismount was finally assembled right when the first cyclists came in and they were pointed over a curb and through some barriers. After they went through transition they came out the wrong way because there were no markings (this was later remedied after the lead group of runners were gone).

I think the funniest was when the lead runners (2 of them) went out to run and the bike that was supposed to lead them was not there - the bike finally left when the 3rd and 4th place runners went out - thinking that they were the lead runners - the bike stayed with them all the way to the finish - little did they know that 2 people finished minutes before them.

In defense of the race organizer I heard a rumor that 20 UCF students had signed up to volunteer and only a handful showed up to help - not sure if that is true or not. But truthfully it was no better organized than some of the races I have seen in Clermont. I would have been pretty mad if I would have paid to race in that event - starting a half hour late (for reasons other than weather) is absolutely unacceptable.

Oh well - another day another disorganized race. After reading this you are probably thinking - Bill, why didn't you get in there and help? The reason is simple, I was out there on a training ride and to support my athletes not to volunteer - might sound cold but that is the way it is.

Frazz is funny... and so very true

For all of those who have trained with TH does this cartoon remind you of anyone or any group of people???

Funny but leaves a nasty visual in the mind...

view here the "Official Holding Pen" of NA Sports - I assume these will be a hot seller like all other NA Sports endorsed items

This is a very interesting article from NA Sports - my guess is that people who finish with their kids, family, pets will not care about a 4 minute penalty and just avoid the "official NAS holding pen". My feeling is that there should be a a coned off section of the finish chute and all the people that want to finish holding hands with whomever they want they can - but a holding pen - interesting!

Notice on the Family Finish Pen
Author: staff June 11, 2008
This policy was created to enhance the event for athletes with children allow them the unique opportunity to share the finish line experience with one child. Athletes who ignore the Family Finish Pen Policy by crossing the finish line with parents, children, grandparents, and yes – even pets, create a safety issue, interfere with other athletes’ finish line photos, and create unnecessary chaos at the finish line.

Continued abuse of the Family Finish Pen Policies outlined below, will force NAS to cancel the Family Finish Pen, resulting in the disqualification of athletes crossing the finish line with any non-participant.
Please respect the Family Finish Pen policies so that NAS can continue to provide this experience.
Family Finish Pen Policies:
Only one child is allowed to participate with each athlete. The child must be between the ages of 6 and 16. No other persons may accompany the athlete in the Finish Chute. No pets, parents, grandparents or significant other is allowed to participate (non-athlete), just the one child. No children younger than six are allowed. Young children present a safety problem and are not allowed. Again, one child only between 6 and 16, no exceptions.
Children participating in the program must be registered at the Family Finish Pen located roughly 200 yards up the finish line on Sherman Ave. No exceptions. Volunteers will be available at the Family Finish Pen to explain the protocol of the program.
North America Sports reserves the right to assess a four-minute penalty to those athletes who do not follow these policies at Ford Ironman Coeur d’Alene.
Failure to follow this policy will result in the cancellation of the Family Finish Pen program altogether, at which point athletes who finish with a non-racer in any fashion will be disqualified. As a company, North America Sports would take this step with much regret.
Please respect the policy so future athletes can enjoy this special opportunity on their race day.

Thank you.

Congrats to the C's

Congrats to the Boston C's for their victory in the NBA finals. Although I did not watch more than 10 minutes of any one game because the NBA is boring to me, the Celtics deserve a big congrats for a great season (guess Doc Rivers really can coach, huh Orlando?)

It certainly seems like the town of Boston has the corner on the Victory Parade these days - in the last 7 years they have had 6 parades - 2 for baseball, 3 for football, and 1 for basketball - too bad the Bruins stink.

Being a Philly phan I am not a Boston fan at all but... - 6 parades in 7 years (and the Red Sox are in first and the Patriots are looking like they might be good next year) they have all the fun. AND they have the worlds greatest marathon!

The early 80s Philadelphia had a decent run - 2 parades (basketball and baseball)in 4 years and 2 losers parades (Flyers and Eagles)in the same time frame. At that point I was too young to enjoy the fun (think adult beverage here) but if the Phillies could ever win one again I will be there - front row - enjoying the festivities!

Not so fast

Here is a headline that caught my eye in the Orlando Sentinel today "Trail Users, Get Ready To Go Under" - Not so fast my friends - read on...

the article was about the underpass that is being built on the Seminole Wekiva Trail at Douglas Rd and 434. anyone who has ever been on this trail knows that crossing that intersection is a pain in butt and often times dangerous.

I have heard many rumors about this underpass being built and notice about a month ago that they were actually working on the underpass. As I read the article some dates and timelines really stuck out as being absurd!

The design for this underpass started in Sept 2003 and ended in August 2006 - what the heck? How does it take 3 years to design a tunnel? I am no engineer so maybe I do not understand the fine details of building an underpass but 3 years? I have been in corporate america and understand that it takes a meeting to decide what to serve at the next meeting but I have to say we could make a decision in less than 3 years (some times)

Building started in January 2008 (what the hell did they do from Aug 2006 when design was done until January 2008) and will be done (as they point out, tentative) in January 2009 - I am ok with taking 1 year to build an underpass (seems quite long to me but I can live with it). I would rather it be right than fall in on me while I am running under the road - or flood during a rain storm.

So from start of design to finish of the underpass we are looking at 5+ years - I find that incredibly long and unreasonable!

On another note - they are also building an underpass at Lake Mary Blvd - this one is only going to take 1 year 4 months to design (guess they learned something in the 3 years it took them to design the 434 one). However building will not take place until about 4-6 months after design is done and will take a year - we can expect to go under Lake Mary Blvd by 2011

Until these underpasses are complete - be careful crossing these busy intersections.

Euro 2008

Euro 2008 continues and Nederlands are looking great right now - they play today but the rumor is they are going to field an inferior team to protect their stars for the next round. Nederlands has clinched their group already and if they lose they will eliminate Italy and France form the next round.

After todays game they will play again on Saturday against the runner up of another group.

first brick since November

I think today was my first brick since November - Kevin and I rode a little over 26 today mixing in some WOT and some rollers in Clermont - I think my heart was ready to burst up Grand Highway to Citrus Tower - and followed that up with a steady 3 mile run in the 7:00 min pace range. Actually felt decent through the entire run - I guess all the running miles have paid off.

I am way behind the training curve for races this summer but I will give it the old college try and see if I can get in some kind of shape that I will not embarrass myself. Most of my season will be duathlons and running to get ready for the races I have planned but maybe I will mix it up int he water a couple times too just to keep everyone honest :-)

Happy Training

Happy Father's Day

Just a quick shout out to all the father's out there - have a terrific day and enjoy YOUR day. Thanks for all you do.

My Dad is the best and I am so glad he is my Dad!

That is a boatload of fishes!

This is Captain Rick (on the left) and Miss Jackie (on the right)- they are honorary Team Hendryx members and this is the mess of fish they caught on their last trip to the Keys. You see Capt Rick and Jackie are the parents of Super Client, Stephanie and they were a savior after last years Miamiman for me personally. At the last minute on Sunday night they agree to take care of a weary triathlete (me) and Beth - they treated us better than any 5 star hotel and are just good people. They wear the TH colors with pride!

Congrats on the fish haul!

Viva La Nederlands

The Netherlands pulled off another huge win yesterday - 4-1 over France. They have now beaten Italy 3-0 and France 4-1 - as you will remember Italy and France played in the finals of the last World Cup. Even know their countryman Peter turned his back on them yesterday (something about work) I cheered them on to victory.

Many of you have asked me why Euro 2008 - my simple reply is - I have a rooting interest because Peter is my client and he is Dutch, Rene' lived in Holland and it is a competition. I will watch just about any competition (except the NBA - too boring)- and to have an interest in the competition I might as well pick a team. I have really lucked out and picked a good team this year.

My workout schedule is in

call me weird or call me a teachers pet (like Beth does) but I received my first 3 weeks of workouts and I am excited to get going. Beth says I am a teachers pet because it is like asking for more homework!

my structured training starts on Sunday with a 25 mile bike and 3 mile run - I will be doing a couple of bricks a week - some run/bike and some bike/run - and really just trying to get my base back to normal.

weekly mileage will be about 100 miles on the bike and 25-30 running, while mixing in some weight training, core work and some swims when i can.

looking forward to this new challenge - I have not done a duathlon in over 4-5 years and I am glad some of the race promoters offer the duathlon option at their races so I can get some training in.

stay tuned for the results

2 days in a row

wow - check it out - workouts on back to back days - today was a relatively easy day. I met Karen M for a training session and we rode 12 and ran 2 - she is training for the UCF race and is rounding in to form nicely - she will be ready to rock on the 22nd.

I also got my workout schedule from Sean today - he is just working on getting me back in to shape and prepared for some long bikes/runs in the future. My bike riding has been relatively non existent since Miamiman last November so we are going to work on that for a while and knock out a couple bricks a week ought to get me back in shape in no time.

very excited - this weekend will be 25 miles in some rollers and a 3-4 mile run off the bike. wooo hooo

I will be riding out of west orange trail in anyone wants to attend the ride - 8:00a at Winter Garden Station - heading west toward the training center

back at it

since my coach is working on my training plan for the next several months to get me ready for Powerman FL with an emphasis on running I figured I better start to get back at it before I get too lazy and it is too hard to get moving.

I went for a nice 4.5 mile run today - it is still kind of hot out there but nothing compared to the 50 miler so it was not too bad. I think I was some where around 34 minutes and it felt pretty easy and relaxed.

This afternoon I will get to my flexibility/strength workout with Steve then hit the track for the speed workout with our groups.

Hope I can walk tomorrow

Happy Training

Tuesday, June 10, 2008

what is next?

it has been 3 weeks of rest, relaxation, and hydration and it is time (as my coach pointed out) for me to chose a new goal race and to start working again. he is absolutely right since we have out Miamiman, 5/10k, marathon and half marathon groups all up and running it is time that I can start to work out again (besides a 3 mile run here and there).

I have two races I am debating about

I really want to run the 40 mile trail race but that requires travel and I am not sure that is in the budget for this year - so I am going to focus my training on Powerman Florida while adding some more run mileage and see what happens.

The last race of the year that I would like to do is the Ragnar Relay - it is an across Florida Relay (191 miles) that is usually run by 12 people - I want to run it with 6 (32 miles a piece, but there will be more on that later - we still need to find a team of runners who can put in 32 miles each and are willing to spend 24 hours together.

Euro 2008

A big shout out to The Netherlands for their 3-0 victory over Italy in the Euro Cup yesterday. Peter, what is the deal with the Orange Unis with the Powder Blue Socks - come one man - next they will be playing in their wood shoes?

Something stupid I saw this weekend

Let me tell you a story of something I saw on Hartwood Marsh Rd this weekend - this not only gives cyclists a bad name but it was extremely stupid and lucky he did not get hurt.

I was driving home from Epic Cycle this weekend and was on Hartwood Marsh - about half way down Hartwood I came upon a line of cars going pretty slow - my first thought on Sunday is always - there is a group of cyclists and the cars are waiting to get a clear path to pass. The road is a hard one to pass on because it is has a lot of curves and hills so you can not see what is ahead of you too well.

Any way - a bunch of cars went around the impediment and I was the thrid car in line now. Here is what I see - a lone cyclist struggling to get up a hill (no problem there, I was the one in the car not working out), BUT he was riding right in the middle of the lane and kind of swerving back and forth. Really being unsafe to himself and others.

A couple cars go by him and it leaves me, a car in front of me and the cyclist - we are appraoching the crest fo the hill and I figure I can wait this guy out and make sure it is clear to pass before I go around him - I did not want him to swerve in to me or the car in front of me.

Right before the top of the hill the guy dismounts his bike in the road (not the shoulder) - guess he could not make it to the top - and stands there in the middle of road. The car in front of me honks to go around and the guys gets pissed and moves further in to the middle of the road.

I am now the lone car behind the cyclist - who is stopped in the middle of the road and trying to get back on his bike. After I go around him I can see him in my review - still standing there - middle of the road - right at the crest of the hill.

Now, I am a cyclist (or at least try to be) but this guy is a duffus and will cause ill will toward the rest of us out riding because he is a duffuss. No, I do not have sympathy on him because it was 90 degrees and he was struggling - gget the helll out of the way and be safe. If you need to walk your bike do so on the shoulder - not in the road. You would expect a broken down or extremely slow car to pull to the side to get out of the way - bikers should do the same.

Any way - I hope he made it home ok and he gets in a little better shape so he can ride the rollers in future rides - until then - get off the road when in trouble - then there is not more trouble.

Just random thoughts from me - Happy Training

Flip Flops - Friend or Foe?

Summer is upon us (in case the 95 degree temps did not give it away) and I am starting to see a lot more flip flops lately. I personally can not wear flip flops because they hurt my achilles and my arches - I however am able to wear crocs because they have a little more support for the arch and heel.

So the age old questions is - is the flip flop our friend or foe? I came across this article today that sums it up for you

http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Springtime/story?id=5013448&page=1

the article basically says that people that wear flip flops a lot are subject to lower leg pain that could lead to injury. it says that we change our gait when we walk in flip flops because we are concerned about stubbing our toe and keeping the flop on. the article also says that you can wear them but it should be in moderation.

My personal opinion is that the flip flop has gotten a lot better - the "traditional" flop had zero support for the heel and no arch support - that is changing - there are all kind of flops out there now that give a little more support.

So the questions of friend or foe is not really answered but for me personally I say Foe and for others I say Friend - I would just not recommend wearing them all the time - mix in a shoe with support once in a while.

Happy Flopping

Amazing

Kenenisa Bekele ran a 26:25.97 10,000 meters today at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon - it is the fastest 10k on American soil and 4th fastest time ever. He now has 3 or the 4 fastest times ever.

This time equates to a 4:15.6 pace for 6.2 miles - simply amazing!

The Olympics are going to be awesome this year.

Horse racing

well, this weekend we have a chance to see history - something we have not seen in 30 years - a horse (and jockey) winning the Triple Crown - will Big Brown win? If he does he will accomplish something that 11 other horses (that won the first two legs) have tried to do in the last 30 years and have not been successful.

Good luck to him - if he wins breaking from the post this weekend you will have to count his Triple Crown as special - he broke from the far outside in Kentucky and won (something only one other horse has ever done), broke from the middle in Maryland and killed everyone, now he get the unfavorable post position in NY.

I can not wait to head to Jai Alai this weekend and get some money down - the first two legs of the Crown we have been out of town and not able to place wagers. I have not bet too much since that ill fated bet a couple years ago (we do not talk about that too much) but overall I am still ahead at the track and plan to keep it that way this weekend.

I know Big Brown is 2-5 and most likely will go off lower than that - but there are some other horses that have long odds (and hopefully will stay that way) that will help the Tri and Super bets. I would share who I like but I do not want to be responsible for anyone losing money :-)

Good luck to all and good luck to Big Brown - I hope he wins to bring back some interest into to horse racing

Funny stuff from Frazz

Fireworks are cool

These pictures are not the best but this is what we saw last night at Epcot. Beth won the honor of viewing the fireworks from a private, invite only spot in France - with all the dessert you can eat.

We ventured to Epcot about 5:30p and proceeded right to ride Test Track because the info board said the line was 10 minutes (score) - we got there and the Mickey line lady said it was 30 minutes (not too bad) so we waited, and waited, and waited - once you are in the middle of the queue you are kind of stuck - after 1:01:32 (I timed it) we were on the ride. Overall, it was fun but not worth 61 minutes of your life In line.

Next we opted for a couple beers and a pretzel and a tour of the world. Because we spent so much time in line we missed Tony Orlando (no Dawn) so we opted for some authentic nachos and tacos (and Dos XX) from Mexico - I never knew cheez wiz was from Mexico :-) - then a tour of the rest of the countries on the way to France for our VIP showing of the fireworks.

At France we had some 1664s then to the VIP area. As the Mickey Guard let us through the velvet rope and we went out on a little patio to enjoy some fine desserts - mini eclairs (I can have 20-30 of them because I am still trying to gain my weight back from the Keys run), cheesecake, fruit, canolli, and sugar free brownies(there were a lot of those left over). After 20 minutes of dessert indulgence - the fireworks started - yeah fireworks.

Man that was fun! Nice to take a break from training once in a while.

Back to work on Monday - more races to gear up for :-)
