Working out in Windy Conditions

After being outside yesterday in the 45 mph gusts of wind I thought I would write about cycling and running in the wind. Of course in central Florida we do not have a lot of hills so the wind can be considered Florida "Hills" - here are some tips for working out in the wind and how to use the wind to make you stronger:

-use the wind as a training tool
-use it to simulate hills
-use it on speed workouts - using the headwind for your power and tail wind for recovery

when running into the wind pretend you are running up hill - shorten your stride some, increase your turnover, lift your knees and drive them forward

when riding into the wind - shift to an easier gear - go aero as much as possible and push your bike forward.

You can simulate speed workouts while it is windy - do your fast riding or running with the wind. Get very fast here - really push for speed. Then turn around into the wind for your recovery - ride or run slowly into the wind and recover before your next interval.

Take advantage of the next windy day to increase your power - it will pay dividends in the future.

Happy training
