Run The DIRT

Saturday Sean and I met at the dirt road at 6:30a for a 10 miler before heading to Lake Louisa for a TNT workout. I was a little weird because it was still very dark at 6;30a and would be for most of the run. We were quite surprised when we showed up and there were 4-5 cars there already - these people must be as nuts as us.

I had my headlamp and Sean had a flashlight so we should be ok. It is a little nerve racking out there because when it is light you see many shotgun shells, empty Bud bottles, and an occasional wild pig. At least there were two of us, but since Sean is way faster than me it would have been me as the sacrificial runner!

The run went well and the headlamp was pretty effective for both of us. We started out at a good pace to warm up and were through the first mile in 7:35. Miles 2-4 we increased the pace each mile and it was feeling pretty good. It is a little weird running in the dark because you can not really see the elevation changes on the dirt road.

When we got to the 5 mile mark the sun started to rise and we could see without help of the headlamp. Miles 6-9 are always fun on the dirt road and they were just as fun this day. We ran nice and steady through this section and actually caught up to one of the runners that was out there (he was running 30 to prepare for Umstead 100). We finished the 10 miles in a controlled 73 minutes (7:18 pace). I actually felt pretty good when it was over.

Sean and I headed over to Lake Louisa for a controlled bike spin for 90 minutes or so.

Monday, 3/17 marks the 2 month mark for Key West 50 miler and structured training begins today!

Happy Training.
